Your Vote Is Your Voice

Over the weekend I was afforded the privilege of serving as parliamentarian and Sergeant-At-Arm’s during the 7th Congressional District Republican Convention.  Representative Alan Clemmons from Horry County called me to perform these roles while he served as Chairman of the Convention.

As parliamentarian it was my role to evaluate the rules and provide a determination as to the proper way to maintain “the rules of the road.”  Further, as Sergeant-at-Arms it was my role to enforce these rules and to help the meeting accomplish it’s objectives.   Thankfully, the meeting went smoothly and everything was completed in a timely manner.  Wouldn’t it be nice for our government to act this way?

Why is it that the people we elect quickly forget that it is “we the people” that elect them?  Many elected officials tend to forget that they are elected as representatives and not politicians.  I believe that we need people to represent us and not politicize us.  Not all elected officials run for selfish reasons, but many forget their values when they get elected.  The allure of money, power, control, etc. tempts those elected from being representatives and turns them into politicians.  We as voters cannot allow this.

When we see an elected official acting as a politician and not as a representative it is “we the people” that need to use the power the founding fathers gave us and vote.  That is our voice and we must exercise our voice by casting a vote to remove those that do not represent what we need.

What good is an elected official that is unwilling to represent those that elect them?  If someone is elected to represent us and fails to be a primary sponsor on a single bill that helps those he represents, has he really represented us?

Stand up and cast your voice this election season,

How do we Unite our Nation

As a person it is easy to get discouraged by the conflicts we have in our government by people whom we have elected.  I see constant conflict occurring around us in regard to how government is acting, taxing, wasting funds, and operating in general.  It is easy to get discouraged; just throw your hands in the air and give up.  “That is just how it is”; “there is nothing we can do.”   Yes there is.

Last night my wife and I needed a night together.  I will admit, I do not like to spend money — but thankfully my wife still loves me.  We borrowed a movie, named KJB, and had a night in together; just the two of us.  It was a great evening and the movie was a true blessing.  The entire movie was about unity; about taking people that despise each other and having them create a solution to a basic human need.  These men lived over 400 years ago and still today we have intellectuals who have different opinions over the same topics.

The Lord gave us free will, and our nation’s laws have allowed us all to have an opinion.  For this reason, I am not discouraged.  Our forefathers used the word of God to craft a document that created this nation, and this nation allows different opinions.  Conflict is a tool that, if used in a positive way, can generate constructive change.

As the President of the City of Georgetown Republican Party and a candidate for South Carolina House Seat 103, I have made a commitment to create this change.  We, as a people, must do more. We must step forward and file for office.  We must become active in candidates’ campaigns.  Many candidates need your help.  It is not just about contributions, but also about volunteering.  Stand up and say that you want change, but also be willing to work for it.

I help every candidate I can.  They may or may not be who I would vote for, but their willingness to stand up for what they believe is admirable.  The other day I appeared in a commercial for a U.S. Congressional Candidate.  We must respect and support those that do not cower from conflict.

400 years ago, King James of England, charged fifty of the Bishops from the Church of England and the Puritans with the task of uniting to create a document that could be used by all to learn the Gospel for themselves.  After seven years of transcription, debate, discussion, and conflict, out came the King James Bible (hence the name KJB).  The conflict and disagreement created a Bible that is still used all over the Earth today to spread the Word of God.  We must use the conflict that exist as a catalyst to push forward this great country and state.

Making Our Community Safer

Did you know that April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month?  Do you drive distracted?

I know that I did and I know that many people still do.  Driving distracted does not just include driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol – it includes anything that will take your focus off the road.  When you are driving you are responsible for controlling a 2,000 lbs weapon that can kill on contact.  Many of us cannot walk and text, much less drive and text or talk on our cell phone.

Driving while talking on the cell phone is equal to about four alcoholic drinks; texting while driving is equal to having eight alcoholic drinks.  If you text while driving the average person will look away from the road and at their phone for 4.6 seconds.  Should you being going 55mph that means you will travel 100 yards (the length of a football field) before you look back at the road.  Is that text or phone call really worth your life or the life of a passenger?  Is it really worth killing someone and being found criminally guilty and/or civilly liable?

Last week, I spoke with the students at Carver’s Bay High School to discuss with them about the dangerous of all kinds of distracted driving prior to their prom.  They took a pledge to focus on their driving – are you willing to do the same?  Are you willing to be a role model for your children and the people around you?

Over 5,000 people a year die while texting and talking on their phone while driving.  Over 1000 trial lawyers are making presentations across this country during the month of April to try to eliminate this problem.  Please help me make sure none of those deaths occur in Georgetown County.

Tonight I am going to speak with Georgetown County Council regarding distracted driving, so please come out to the county council meeting to learn what we can all do to make our community safer.  This campaign is not about me it is about this community and what we can do to make it a better place to live.

Radio Appearance

On Wednesday, April 4th, I had the privilege of being a guest with Rod Stalvey and host, Lee Padgett on the Town Hall Meeting on 1400 AM WGTN radio station in Georgetown.  What a great experience!  We discussed issues that were important to us including the Georgetown port, 521 widened, Hwy 31 completion, and I-73.  These areas are the most efficient way to get imports and exports in and out of Georgetown.  Once these roads are completed they will create jobs and help our community grow and prosper.

This is why I am running for SC House Seat 103 which Carl Anderson currently holds.  He has held this seat since 2005 and has been the primary sponsor on 5 bills, none of which do anything to bring the people of Georgetown jobs.  We need someone who is going to be a true representative and not just a politician - that is why I am running.  This is about the people of District 103.

Feeding Of The 5000

Dear Friends and Family,

We announced Friday, March 30th that we are running for SC house Seat 103 and the support has been contagious – have you caught it?  We ventured out to Lambertown on Saturday night, spoke to some people out there and they addressed to me some of their concerns.  We have already put in some calls and emails on those.  Then we had a little get together in downtown Georgetown.  What a great event and great fun.

In church Sunday we were taught of Jesus’ feeding of the 5,000.  Just like Jesus’ Disciples I do not presume to come to you with all the answers, but I will give you everything I have and will trust in the Lord to do the rest.  Trust and Faith.  Believe in this country, state, and your candidates.  Please do everything you can to support then.  We need a new direction; your vote and contributions can make that happen.

Win With Winslow,
